Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30/09/2025
At Materio we prioritise your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have when you use our platform.
1. Information We Collect
We collect limited data to operate and improve Materio:
- Device & Usage Data — browser type, screen size, language, time spent, pages visited, and similar technical data. Collected via analytics tools to measure engagement and improve the product.
- Cookies — small files stored on your device to remember preferences and make the site work better. Some cookies are essential for the service; others are optional analytics or advertising cookies. You can manage cookies via your browser and via the Settings tab in Materio.
- PDF Interaction Data (non-personal) — scroll activity, zoom levels, fullscreen usage, and annotation actions used to improve study tools and features.
- User Account Data — when you create a Materio account (invite-only as of this policy), we store name, username, email, password (stored securely as a strong hash), and profile picture.
2. How We Use Your Data
We use the data we collect to:
- Understand which features are most used and improve Materio.
- Improve performance, fix bugs, and develop new features.
- Provide account functionality and support.
We do not sell your personal data to third parties. Where we display advertisements (see next section), we work with ad partners who may collect data as described below.
3. Advertising (New)
Materio now displays ads served by Google AdSense. When you view Materio pages that include ads, Google and its partners may collect certain information and use cookies or similar technologies to serve, personalise, and measure ads. This may include the page URL, your IP address, device information, and general location derived from IP. Third-party vendors (including Google) use advertising cookies to serve ads based on a user’s visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
What this means for you:
- You may see personalised ads based on your browsing activity unless you turn off ad personalisation. Google uses advertising cookies and other technologies to limit the number of times an ad is shown, to measure ad performance, and to personalise ads.
- If you prefer not to receive personalised ads, you can change ad settings via Google’s controls (for example, My Ad Center / Ads Settings). Turning off personalised ads does not stop ads from being shown; it only makes them less tailored to your interests.
Our responsibilities and what we do: We do not use the data collected by Google for separate advertising beyond what is described here, and we do not sell personal data. We display the ads as a way to support Materio’s development and hosting costs.
4. Cookies & Similar Technologies
Some cookies are essential for site functionality; others are for analytics or advertising:
- Essential cookies — required for core functionality (e.g., login session).
- Analytics cookies — used to understand site usage and improve Materio. You can opt out in Settings.
- Advertising cookies (third party) — set by ad providers such as Google to serve and measure ads. Using AdSense requires that publishers notify users of the use of advertising cookies and obtain applicable consent where required by law.
5. Your Choices
- Cookie controls: You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Some Materio features may not work if cookies are disabled.
- Analytics opt-out: You can opt out of analytics cookies from the Materio Settings tab.
- Ad personalisation opt-out: To stop personalised ads from Google, use Google’s My Ad Center or Ads Settings. Turning off personalisation does not stop ads, it only makes them non-personalised.
6. Data Retention & Security
We retain your data only as long as necessary to provide Materio and comply with legal obligations. We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect account data (including hashed passwords and secure storage). No system is 100% secure; if there is a security incident impacting personal data, we will notify affected users in accordance with applicable law.
7. Content Disclaimer
All study materials on Materio are shared by students or collected from freely available public sources for educational use only. We do not claim ownership of posted content. If you are the original creator of any material and would like it removed or credited, please contact Materio support.
8. Contact Us
